Obituary of Raymond R. Maddock

WESTPORT, CONN Raymond Robert "Ray" Maddock, a lifetime resident of Westport, died on January 7 in Greenwich Hospital, of complications from pneumonia. He was born on July 5, 1932, in the West Parish Road home of his parents, Lawrence and Irene Crossman Maddock. His father, Lawrence Maddock, was a mason, contractor and builder. His paternal grandfather, Alfred Maddock, had lived with his 13 children in the South Compo Road home once rented by F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald. Ray's maternal grandfather was the first postmaster in Green's Farms. Growing up, Ray enjoyed fishing and trapping. He and neighborhood friends Ed Capasse and Bob Duffy would check their traps before school. He sold the skins to raise money for his bank account. A member of the Staples High School Class of 1951, Ray played center on the basketball team. He also ran track and played baseball. In 1994, he was honored for those accomplishments by the Sportsmen of Westport. Ray attended the University of Connecticut, but left to join the Air Force. He returned after his service, and graduated in 1958 as a business major. He was a member of the Theta Chi fraternity, and during summers while in college he worked at Rex Marine and as a chauffeur for the Warburg family. Also during college he married his wife, Carole McGarrie Maddock. They bought a house on Old Mill at Compo Cove. When Allen Raymond died last spring, the Maddocks became the longest-owning residents of Compo Cove and Old Mill. After college Ray became a salesman in the computer field, disregarding warnings that computers were just a fad. He sold mainframes for Remington Rand Univac, and won many awards as the company's top salesman. His proudest achievement was selling the computer that became the NASDAQ system. After more than two decades with Remington Rand, Ray moved to Nixdorf Computers. He rose through the management ranks. He retired 22 years ago as Tandem Computers' director of sales for the Eastern United States. In retirement, Ray enjoyed reading, and playing golf and tennis. He was also a member of the Y's Men. Ray and Carole continued their long love of skiing too, throughout the U.S. Long ago, they built a house at Stratton Mountain. Their two sons raced there, and became captains of their Staples High School and college ski teams. Avid waterskiers, Ray and Carole spent many weekends in a tent on Cockenoe Island. They sailed there in a boat Ray had built. Ray and Carole were 37-year members of the Patterson Club. They also joined the Fayerweather Yacht Club. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Carole; son Gregg and his wife Dana of Huntington Beach, Calif.; son Todd and wife Laurie of Bay Village, Ohio, and four grandchildren: Kelly (Scottsdale, Ariz.); Erica (Denver); Colin and Ian (Bay Village). Ray is also survived by his brother Lawrence "Larry" Maddock and his wife, Fran Nevins Maddock, of Wolfeboro, N.H. and his brother in law William "Bill" McGarrie of Westport and thirteen nieces and nephews through out the country and his beloved cousin Ardela "Dale" Broch Worthley of Madison WI and Cousins Curt Maddock of CO and Robert Maddock of VT and Alfred Broch of Seattle, WA Services will be held Friday, January 16, 2015 at 2 p.m. at Greens Farms Congregational Church, where Ray worshiped during his childhood years walking to church from his West Parish road home. Interment will be held on June 26, 2026 at 12:00PM in Willowbrook Cemetery, 395 Main Street, Westport. The Harding Funeral Home of Westport is directing arrangements.
