Obituary of Edward D. Laraja

GREENWICH, CONN

Edward D. Laraja, age 91, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, October 4th at Greenwich Hospital.

Edward was born in New York City on July 24, 1927. He was the youngest of three sons born to Salvatore and Assunda (Garramone) Laraja. Edward spent most of his youth in Mount Vernon, New York and graduated from A.B. Davis High School. Following graduation, he attended the Virginia Military Institute for two years prior to serving in the Merchant Marine.

Following his post-war effort, Edward attended and graduated from Colgate University with top honors and membership in the Sigma Nu Fraternity.

Edward resided in New Rochelle, NY and has lived in Greenwich for over thirty years. Edward excelled in business as an international food broker for S.A. Laraja and Sons Inc. He was also Vice President of International Purchasing for Progresso Foods from 1971-1976. He served as the President of the Olive Oil Association of America, Director of the American Chamber of Commerce for Trade with Italy and Spain, and Director of the Cheese Importers Association of America during his career. 


An avid golfer, Edward was a long-time member and served on the Board of Directors of The Wykagyl Country Club in New Rochelle, NY. Golf, one of his greatest passions, was a big part of Edward's family and social life. He was well respected and admired by his fellow members and the staff at Wykagyl.

Edward was beloved by family and friends. He was known for his ability to connect with all he met. His sense of humor, caring personality and love of a good conversation made him a sought-out friend and mentor. He was a loving, supportive father, grandfather and uncle.

He especially enjoyed gatherings with extended family where he entertained with remarkable stories and kept all laughing. Edward is survived by his loving wife, Carol (Taormina) Laraja, his daughters, Susan Lemonier (Mark) and RoseLynn Jarrett (Thomas) and five grandchildren; Dana Lemonier, Caroline Lemonier, Edward Lemonier (Allison), Elizabeth Jarrett, Estelle Jarrett and many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to the Leo P. Gallagher Funeral Home in Greenwich for visitation on Monday, October 15th from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Greenwich at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the Disabled American Veterans in Edward's name.

Private Entombment was held here at Willowbrook Cemetery, Westport.
