Obituary of Phyllis D. Ohlin Gammons
NORWALK, CONN
Phyllis D. Ohlin Gammons (Beattie) went home to be with the Lord on September 12, 2018. Born November 23, 1926, she was the daughter of Paul E. Ohlin and Ruth Nelson Ohlin of Stratford, CT. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Robert F. Gammons of Westport, CT. She was one of 7 siblings. She is predeceased by her brother, Paul E. Ohlin, Jr., Pearl Juris, Betty E. Ohlin, and Ruth Steeves. Surviving siblings include Doryce Smelter and Gail Osborne, and sister-in-law Elaine Ohlin.
She is survived by her three beloved stepchildren: Marjorie Flatley (Thomas), Douglas Gammons, and Richard Gammons (Roberta). She is survived by her four beloved step-grandchildren Michael Flatley, Catherine Flatley, Brianna Gammons and Victoria Gammons. She spent the last year of her life with her loving niece, Debra Hawkins and husband Michael and family members: Weston Hawkins (Ashley), Rachelle Hawkins Maldonado (Anthony), Chelsey Hawkins Testani (Alex) and Tyler Hawkins (Liana). In addition, she leaves behind 19 nieces and nephews and many grandnieces and grandnephews.
Phyllis was a graduate of New Milford High School Class of 44. She attended Bridgeport Junior College. Upon graduating she worked various jobs including assistant to Dr. Kurt Oster, Cardiologist, an employment interviewer in Stamford, CT at the State Labor Dept, design consultant at Robbins Floor Products in its New York City showroom where she was asked to design the front page of the magazine Home Furnishings Daily as well as designing a floor for the famous Waldorf Astoria in NYC. Subsequently, she worked as director of consumer relations at Schick Safety Razor in Milford, CT. After 14 years, she left Schick and worked for Combe Inc. in White Plains, NY as director of consumer services. Her working career ended as manager for the Saugatuck Harbor Yacht Club in Westport, CT.
Throughout her working and retired years, Phyllis excelled in creative arts including writing, directing, painting scenery and engaged in costume design for several Variety Shows. She also performed in several musicals, painted beautiful works of art, enjoyed sculpting and sketching portraits and wrote a children’s book as well as a mystery. Phyllis belonged to and was an officer of several clubs: Tuscumbia Garden Club in Alabama, Quinnipiac Poodle Club and the Wednesday Afternoon Music Club. She was secretary of the Poodle Club of Southern California and the Poodle Club of America. She raised and showed poodles professionally. She was kind and gentle of spirit and will be greatly missed by all.
Friends are invited to attend calling hours on Saturday, September 15, 2018 from 8:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. at the Trinity Baptist Church, 300 North Benson Road, Fairfield, CT 06824. Interment will follow at Willowbrook Cemetery, 395 Main Street, Wesport, CT 06880.
