Obituary of Willie J. Davis

Please share a memory of Willie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
HAMPTON, VA God has called Wille James Davis from labor to reward to a place far more significant than ours on Wednesday, June 22, 2022, at 7:08 p.m. Willie, the son of the late Will U Davis and Caroline C Davis, was born June 28, 1925, in Terre Ceicier, NC. His Christian life began when he was baptized at Invitation AME Zion in Green County, NC. Willie was a member of St. Stephens AME Zion Church, Farmville, NC. He was a choir member for many years and spread joy with his prominent voice and songs. He attended H.B. Suggs High School in Farmville, NC., and later joined the U.S. Navy. He united in Holy Matrimony with Sue Mae Wiggins Davis on Feb 6, 1947; five (5) children were born through this union. He relocated from Farmville, NC, to Stamford, CT, in August 1960. Willie joined Bethel AME Church soon after moving to Stamford, CT, where he joined C J Edmonds male chorus and senior choir. Willie served as a class leader; he was a member of the Steward Board and took pleasure in helping people and visiting the sick at home, nursing homes, and hospitals. After relocating to Richmond, VA, he belonged to St. Paul’s Baptist Church and later Gospel Baptist Church. Upon relocating to Hampton, VA, he became a New Hope Baptist Church member, where he is affectionately known as “Pop Davis”. Willie is predeceased by his wife, Sue Mae Davis, a daughter, Aurelia M Barton (Bitty), and two sons, Willie J Davis and Willie C Davis. Left to cherish his memories are two daughters Ms. Barbara Dwight (James, deceased) of Queens, NY, Cathy Forde (Fred) of Hampton, VA, and a son, Tyron Davis (Patricia) of Roswell, GA. He also leaves behind 13 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews. Willie was a wise and loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, and friend. He never met a stranger, and one of his sayings was, “Memory is a way of holding on to the things you love, things you are, and the things you never want to lose.” Although it is difficult today to look beyond the sorrow, may looking back in memory help comfort you tomorrow. Our prayer: Lord, thank you for granting us 96 years with Willie (Da, Dad, Gramps, Grandpa, Willis, Mr. Willie). Thank you for all the wisdom he shared through 5 generations. Even today, we will not forget how bright his light shined. May we remember how much he loved you and put you first. We will find a peace that surpasses all understanding through you, God-only. Grant us the joy of love through Jesus Christ, Our Lord, and Savior, Amen. Visitation will be held on Wednesday June 29, 2022 from 10:00AM - 11:00AM followed by a service of celebration at 11:00AM at Bethel AME Church ,150 Fairfield Ave., Stamford, CT. Interment will follow at Willowbrook Cemetery in Westport, CT
