Obituary of James P. Backiel

BETHANY, CT James P. Backiel, 81, husband of the late Joyce (Vingo) Backiel, and devoted father of Christopher S. Backiel, died Sunday, September 18, 2022 in Norwalk Hospital. He was the son of the late Stanley and Mary Backiel. Jim grew up on Old Road in Westport and was a graduate of Staples High School. He was an avid bowler and a veteran of the U.S. Navy. In the late 1950's and early 1960's he worked at Westport Lanes and the Westport Batting Cages, which was connected to the Westport Golf Range. Jim also worked at Nash Engineering in Norwalk prior to his retirement. In addition to Christopher, he is survived by cousins, Jack Backiel, Barbara Cieplinski, Janet McGoldrick and Irene Hubbard and was predeceased by his brothers, Stanley and Michael Backiel. Calling hours will be on Tuesday from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the FAIRFIELD FUNERAL HOME of EDMUND W. DOUGIELLO, 36 SOUTH PINE CREEK ROAD. Committal service, with Military Honors, will be on Wednesday at noon at Willowbrook Cemetery in Westport.
