WEST HARTFORD, CONN
ames E. Porter (90) of West Hartford, CT died on August 5, 2023, after living one heck of life.
He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Barbara J. Porter (Brown), his daughter, Jamie Lynn Porter and her husband, Michael Dacey as well as his sister-in-law Arlene Porter and his nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Marjorie Johnstone and his brother, Richard Porter.
Born in Norwalk in 1933, Jim also lived in Darien and Westport over the years. In his youth, he was a champion swimmer, and enjoyed roller skating and ice skating. During the Korean War, Jim was a master sergeant in the Army infantry motor pool but was also known to lose those stripes given his tendency to break the rules. An avid fisherman and talented gardener, he had a wicked sense of humor, and a love of life. He enjoyed smoking and drinking for far longer than was good for him.
Jim was a letter carrier in Darien for over 30 years, was vice president of the postal union and an AFL-CIO member. He also worked at his friend Ernie's bar in Darien in the 1960's and 1970's. Jim was a lifetime member of the VFW and a trustee of the Darien VFW post.
Jim could be kind and cantankerous. He would give his time to help anyone who was in need and tried in his own way to make the world a better place when he wasn't making mischief. We will miss him.
Burial at Willowbrook Cemetery will be private at the convenience of the family.
