Obituary of Sadie Mae Smith
Sadie Mae (Shippy) Smith of Norwalk, passed away on Tuesday, October 31, 2017 after an illness. She was 88.
Sadie Mae was born December 2, 1928 in Gaffney, SC to the late Edgar Shippy and Susie Callahan Shippy.
She joined the Bethel Baptist Church at an early age under the leadership of the late Rev. Tobin. She was a member of the Youth Sunday School and the Senior Choir. She graduated from Granard High School at the age sixteen in 1945. She was united in marriage to the love of her life Joe Franklin on May 6, 1946. Through this union they became the parents of nine children.
She was Assistant to the late Dr. L M Rosemand, and later worked at the Gaffney Memorial Hospital as a Nursing Assistant. She and Joe relocated to New Canaan, CT in 1950. She worked at Norwalk Hospital as a Nursing Assistant for thirty-three years.
Upon relocating she joined Community Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Cora E Scott. She was consecrated as a Deaconess in September 1958. She was a members of the Adult Sunday School, the Senior Choir, the Adult Fellowship, the Gospel Chorus, Secretary of the Cora E Scott Missionary, the Pastor's Aide, Member of the Kitchen Committee, President of the Les Bonnes Scholarship Fund Club and President of the Self Denial Club.
She was predeceased in death by four siblings, two infant sons and one daughter. She leaves to cherish her memories two sons James Franklin Smith of Gaffney SC; Ronald Shippy Smith (Evelyn) of Orange, CT; four daughters Johnette Elise Grant of Norwalk, CT; Santa Maria Jones (Larry) of Shelby, NC; Andrea Katrina Smith of Norwalk, CT and Adele Rene Smith of Norwalk, CT; eleven grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren; one godson.
Sadie will be laid to rest on Friday, November 10, 2017 here at Willowbrook Cemetery, following her funeral service.
